BotCon 2012 Toy Reveal – The Overlord Gigatron

Over the holidays, BotCon.com began revealing the toys in the BotCon 2012 box set. The first one to be revealed was The Overlord, Gigatron, a remolded Revenge of the Fallen Bludgeon, making the first time a quasi-movie mold has been used for a BotCon exclusive. Granted, Bludgeon was created to be both a “Movie-style” and “Classics-style” toy, and it’s not a Paramount copyrighted design, but still, it’s a first.

The toy is meant to be a reimaginging of the Generation 1 character Overlord, but with a new name, it’s hard to say what the characterization will be. It’s said he will be a samurai type figure, so we could see some interesting stuff.

The vehicle mode looks nice enough. The blues seem brighter than the G1 toy, but computer pictures can lie. It’s definitely a nice match to the G1 character’s tank mode.

The robot mode is where I have an issue. The robot lips… annoy me. Don’t know if they were going for pouty or smirky, but they don’t do anything for me. In fact, they kind of turn me off from the toy. The robot mode does definitely look like a samurai, but considering the mold, that’s not surprising.

I guess for me, I don’t attach a lot of significance to the character. I didn’t pay attention to Japanese Transformers for a long time, so I have no real love for Masterforce. I know The Last Stand of the Wreckers was a fan-favorite mini-series, but I honestly don’t remember much about the story and how Overlord was depicted in it.

I don’t hate this toy, but it leaves me with a feeling of ambivalence. It’s a nice job, but it doesn’t wow me.
