Comic Quick Look – Transformers: MTMTE #19, Prime Beast Hunters #3

Here’s a double-dip of Transformers comics from the past two weeks.  IDW released Transformers: More than Meets the Eye #19 and Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters #3, two distinct tales from two different universes.  And fittingly enough, I have two different opinions about them.

One of the things I’ve noticed is that for the past few years, Transformers comics were — well, not exactly forgettable, but it was hard to remember what happened from issue to issue.  Back when Marvel was producing the original Generation 1 series, I could pick up a new issue and immediately remember where the previous issue left off.  Maybe that was because I read the comics multiple times, maybe because the stories were much more memorable — maybe both.

So it’s nice to have a series like MTMTE — I can open up the cover, and almost immediately, I remember what happened last issue.  In this case, “Ultra Magnus” was revealed to be Minimus Ambus and Ratchet was revealed to be basically just a bit ahead of — wait, sorry, basically just a head.  In this issue, we learn how Ambus became Magnus, what happened to the real Magnus, Pharma splits with a few Autobots, and Star Saber appears to become the new head cop.

Yeah, I know, I tease with that.  The thing is, you don’t want to know what really happens until you read the comic.  It’s another great tale by John Roberts, and once again, you’re left at the end, whimpering to yourself, wondering how he can sleep soundly at night with such crazed ideas in his head.

Beast Hunters #3, however — heck, I don’t really remember what happened in previous issues, other than the Dinobots are split up, trying to do something, and really, I’m not sure what the point of this series is, other than to introduce Predacons into the mix, perhaps?  It’s… a comic series that exists.  I wish I could say more about it, but honestly, I don’t know.  Maybe when the story is all done, I’ll have more to say.

Part of it, though, is my dislike of having pre-Earth Dinobots looking like dinosaurs.  My brain just doesn’t want to accept that.  Maybe it’s me, maybe it’s the idea, I’m not sure.  Still, I do like Swoop’s robot mode design.

Not much, is it?
