2012 – The Geekly Fast Forward (Part 2)

Welcome back!  In Part 1 of this 2012 preview, I talked a bunch of gibberish about the first six months of the year to come.  So, since the rest of the year is even more nebulous, this should make for even more stupid talk.  Let’s get to it!

JULY

July 6 – The Amazing Spider-Man swings its way into movie theaters!  See what I did there?  Expect every movie review to contain a pun of this nature.  As for the movie, well, I don’t know why we need to reboot this franchise, the new costume looks goofy, but I’ve been a Spider-Man fan since I was a little kid, so I’ll be seeing this one opening night.

July 12-15 – San Diego Comic-Con!  I probably won’t be there, but I hope someone from ASM will be.  Cause, y’know, new toys and stuff.

July 20 – The Dark Knight Rises and Bane mumbles.  (Again, opening night viewing. Can’t wait.)

AUGUST

August 3 – Total Recall is remade with Colin Farrel in the lead role.  Somehow, I don’t expect him to demand Cohaagen to “give this people air”, but once can hope.

Wow.  August is kind of a slow month, isn’t it?

SEPTEMBER

If “Community” isn’t on NBC’s fall line up, there will be hell to pay.

“Doctor Who” Series 7 returns to BBC and BBC America… hopefully.  I can’t believe we have such a long break between series, but I can’t wait.  Steven Moffat wrote the show into an interesting premise, and I hope that we see some new sides to the Time Lord.

As for other TV shows…. come on, it’s January as I write this, I have no idea what’s will be there.  But I do know that Boardwalk Empire will return after True Blood ends its season, and after last season’s shocking BE finale… I’m quite curious as to where they go from here.

September 14 – Resident Evil: Retribution.  Really?  REALLY?

But Finding Nemo is rereleased to theaters.  Awesome!  I loved that movie!  But it’s in 3-D.  Well…. maybe.  Just maybe.

September 28 – Dredd premieres.  That’s Judge Dredd.  “Mr. I am the law!”  I… oh, man, Hollywood, what are you doing?

OCTOBER

October 5 – Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie is released.  I know nothing about this movie.  But it’s got a good pedigree.  Could be nifty.

October 11-14 – New York Comic Con!  Hope we’ll have pics from the show.

October 31 – Go get your costume on.  Get candy.  Win prizes.  Send us pics!

NOVEMBER

November 2 – Sorry.  I was wrong.  Dredd wasn’t the sign that Hollywood has finally run out of ideas.  The remake of Red Dawn is released.

No.  Just…. no.

November 9 – James Bond returns in Skyfall.  How many people will think this is based on the game Skyrim?  As for the movie, I loved Daniel Craig’s debut in Casino Royale, but I only saw Quantum of Solace once and don’t remember much about it.

DECEMBER

December 14 – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits the screens.  Wow, the trailer was absolutely beautiful.  I am so looking forward to going back to Middle Earth after a decade of advances in special effects and cinematography.  However, I’ve not read the book and haven’t seen the animated adaptation in decades, so I have no idea if the story changes will bug me or not.  I do know that Peter Jackson seems really keen on including characters who shouldn’t be there….

December 21 – Just in time for Christmas we get a zombie film, World War Z. Actually, this may not be your standard zombie flick.  Never read the book, but I’m intrigued.

In toy news, well, I’m sure there will be new toys on the shelf in time for the holiday buying season.  And in the TV world, watch a Christmas special or two.  I love “Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, and the underrated “Jim Henson’s The Christmas Toy”.

That does it for this look ahead to 2012!  If you found it informative, I’d be really surprised.
