I admit it. I kinda laughed at the prospect of a remake of Total Recall. I honestly didn’t think we needed it. Sure, the original gave us such wonderful lines to quote/mock, but I felt that a remake once again was Hollywood taking the easy way out. Well, yesterday, the first official trailer hit (after a teaser trailer for the trailer was released a few days ago…. okay, then). I admit it. This looks good. I have moved this off my “See it when it comes to HBO/Netflix” list to “Might see this in the theaters.”

Movie Review: The Hunger Games
This past weekend, my wife and I went to see The Hunger Games, the action-packed adaptation of the first book of Suzanne Collins’ ultra-successful book trilogy. Starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katiness Everdeen, the movie follows her as she leaves her home to take part in a cruel and highly political game of survival. Thoughts Having read the first book several months ago, I knew what to expect from this movie, although I was curious how they would handle the story. The book is told entirely from Katniss’ first-person point-of-view, so unless they used an inner (or outer) monologue, details would

So on Sunday, my wife happened see on Twitter that Michael Bay was changing the origins of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for his big-screen movie. “How so?” I asked. “He’s making them aliens.” “… say what?” So, I do some searching and I find this quote on io9:
Continue reading2012 – The Geekly Fast Forward (Part 2)
Welcome back! In Part 1 of this 2012 preview, I talked a bunch of gibberish about the first six months of the year to come. So, since the rest of the year is even more nebulous, this should make for even more stupid talk. Let’s get to it!
Continue reading2012 – The Geekly Fast Forward (Part 1)
Happy New Year! Okay, so it’s a few days past New Year’s, but really, we’re only about 1% of the way through the year; that’s not too much time to have passed. This year is shaping up to be another banner year for geekly stuff, but it’s hard to keep it all straight. So that’s where ASM comes in — to continue making it hard to make sense of it all. This list is not all-encompassing, nor do I make any claims as to its accuracy. Consider it just some ruminations on the year ahead. Let’s dive in!
Continue readingNYCC 2011: What the Heck is Unit:E?
So, Justin Aclin tweeted this picture earlier this afternoon, calling it the “sleeper hit of the con?” It’s a promotional poster of Unit:E, which is, well, just look at it: It appears to be a new story that combines a lot of Hasbro properties into one continuity. Or something. We’ve got Jem and the Holograms, M.A.S.K. (holy crap M.A.S.K.!), Stretch Armstrong, Candy Land, Battleship Galaxies, the Action Man, The Micronauts, and Primordia. What does it mean? TFW2005 found a trademark earlier this year that claims it will be for a new Hasbro Studios movie. Whatever it is, it’s piqued our
Continue readingIt’s Dark of the Moon Week!
The movie you’ve all been waiting for… well, okay, that’s Captain America, and that doesn’t hit until later in July. However, the other movie you’ve been waiting for is Transformers: Dark of the Moon! And tomorrow night, it will premiere in 3D across the United States, with normal 2D showings starting on Wednesday. And to celebrate, ASM is having “Dark of the Moon” week, where each day we’ll bring you Transformers reviews and other stuff. Well, okay, reviews. But we’ll have some old and new toys to review, and hopefully Thursday we’ll have our Dark of the Moon movie review

I’d like to think I’m a pretty easy-going guy when it comes to franchise reboots. The new Transformers franchise? Okay, I’ve come way down on my love of ROTF, but I’m okay with what Michael Bay and others did with the aesthetic look of the characters, as well as changing vehicle modes, etc. The new Star Trek? Totally loved it. Sure, it reboots continuity, but it did it in a way that keeps all the old stories intact. But this new Smurfs movie? Oh, boy, I’m having trouble swallowing this one. Watch the new teaser and read spoilers after the
