“Get Smurf’d” Is Right

I’d like to think I’m a pretty easy-going guy when it comes to franchise reboots.
The new Transformers franchise?  Okay, I’ve come way down on my love of ROTF, but I’m okay with what Michael Bay and others did with the aesthetic look of the characters, as well as changing vehicle modes, etc.
The new Star Trek?  Totally loved it.  Sure, it reboots continuity, but it did it in a way that keeps all the old stories intact.
But this new Smurfs movie?  Oh, boy, I’m having trouble swallowing this one.  Watch the new teaser and read spoilers after the jump.
Ugh.  Just… ugh.
So, apparently in this movie, Gargamel chases the Smurfs through a portal in the forest and they end up in modern-day Manhattan.
Why?  Why did we need this?  While Hank Azaria has the look of Gargamel… no, the Smurfs belong in the medieval time period.  They just do.
And did we really need the Smurfs theme remixed with Tone Loc? I can answer that for you — no, we did not.
I have very low hopes for this.  Maybe not Marmaduke-level low, but low nonetheless.
Hope I’m proven wrong.
