Comic Review: “Code Monkey Save World” #1

I’ll be honest; I remember hearing about Code Monkey Save World months ago, and then it fell off my radar.  It wasn’t until this morning that writer Greg Pak tweeted about it that my neurons reassembled themselves and made me think, “… oh, yeah, based on one of my favorite Jonathan Coulton songs.”  Greg was kind enough to provide a review copy for me. Folks, don’t fall into the same trap I did and forget about this comic.  This comic is fun.  No, wait, let me bold and allcaps that — it’s FUN.  If you’re a Jonathan Coulton fan, you’ll undoubtedly understand

Comic Review: Star Wars #10

When we last left off our heroes (meaning, Star Wars #9, not the last time I reviewed this comic), Leia had travelled to the remains of Alderaan where she found a derelict ship piloted by the very man who created the Death Star’s primary laser weapon.  Han and Chewie had survived a dog-fight with Boba Fett and are hiding out on Coruscant.  Luke and Wedge had infiltrated the Star Destroyer Devastator while Prithi waits in her X-Wing. Spoilers Below This issue opens with Luke and Wedge trying to stay alive onboard the Devastator.  Hiding out on the ship has offered the two of

Comic Review: “The Star Wars” #2 (of 8)

Mild spoilers below. This month’s issue of The Star Wars is the print-version of deja vu.  There is much in this story that will make you think, “… this seems familiar”, because you can start seeing more of how the final version of Star Wars: A New Hope came into being from this first draft. Case in point: this issue contains a huge space battle.  It’s no surprise.  First, it’s Star Wars – of course there’s a space battle.  Second, the previews from Dark Horse showed it.  What’s interesting about this battle is that it’s obviously the Rebels vs. the Death Star from the

Comic Quick Look: Transformers Beast Hunters #5

I’m not sure what it is about this series that makes it hard for me to really enjoy it.  Last issue ended the first story line about the Dinobots on Cybertron, and I called it a solid “Meh”.  I also hoped that the new story starting here in issue #5 would grab me more. Well, so far, so bad.  I should be caring about these characters, right?  I mean, I love the Dinobots, I love the fact that they’re teammates who don’t necessarily bicker.  There’s an appearance by a new version of a beloved Marvel Transformers character — okay, beloved might

Comic Review: The Transformers: Regeneration One #0

Last time in The Transformers: Regeneration One: Hot Rod was sent spiralling through time by Primus. Okay, when I first heard about this Zero Issue, I admit I was excited about it, primarily for three words: Geoff. Slaggin’. Senior. Yes, UK/US Marvel Transformers artist extraordinaire, Geoff Senior, would be returning to pencil interior pages of a US Transformers comic, for the first time in over a decade.  He’s provided retailer incentive covers for RGO, and he did some work for the UK comic back in 2007, but unless I’m missing some information, the last pages he pencilled was for BotCon 2000’s “Reaching the Omega

Comic Review – “Brain Boy” #1

I’m a sucker for a story that starts out with our protagonist caught in the middle of some mess then then flashes back to show how she/he got into said mess.  (See: “Alias”, Mission Impossible: 3, numerous other shows and stories.) That being said, this is how Brain Boy #1 starts: I love it.  Right away we see our hero — for lack of a better word — strapped to a chair, guns pointed at him, and he says he has his enemies where he wants them?  Fred Van Lente doesn’t waste time hooking us with what appears to be an implausible statement.  Of

Comic Quick Look — Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters #4

When I took a look at issue #3 of Transformers Prime: Beast Hunters, I said that I was having trouble accepting that the Dinobots looked like Earth dinosaurs, even though they had never been to our planet.  Well, I’m glad to say that issue #4 addresses my complaint.  In the course of fighting their organic counterparts, the Dinobots discover that the dinosaurs were part of Shockwave’s experiments.  He apparently had discovered them on Earth and decided to replicate them on Cybertron. Seems simple enough.  It’s an okay read.  It’s Dinobots and dinosaurs and huge fights, but I’m having problems caring about

Comic Quick Look: Transformers: More than Meets the Eye #20

When we last left the Transformers, Pharma had sliced Ambulon in half, forcing Ratchet to try to save his life, and Minimus “Ultra Magnus” Ambus had his head destroyed by Justice Tyrest.  Add to that Autobots still stuck in a cell and Cyclonus, Dai Atlas and Whirl fighting for their lives outside, and you’ve got yourself one hell of a mess. The problem with reviewing a comic like this is that unlike Regeneration One, it seems more of a crime to go into much detail of James Roberts’ plot.  There are some twists and turns I did not see coming, and

Comic Review – Transformers: Regeneration One #94

We’re getting close to the end, folks.  There’s only six issues left to go in the series — well, technically seven, since we’re getting Regeneration One #0 next month — so we should savor this look back to the bygone era of Transformers storytelling, because soon we won’t have it any more.  Good thing there’s a big-ol’ Ultra Magnus vs. Galvatron fight in this issue, just like the old days of Marvel UK. For those who don’t remember, Simon Furman wrote some masterful epics in the UK version of Transformers before he did the same in the US.  In Target: 2006, he laid the groundwork
