Worth the price? It’s worth it for the novelty of having a Megatron that looks like the old G1 toy. But don’t overpay for him.

Although we’ve had Megatron in a gun form back with the Classics version in late 2006, this is the first time that Hasbro has released a Megatron toy in the United States that looks like an actual gun as opposed to a “blaster” or “laser pistol”. But does the small size hinder the toy’s appeal?

Robot Mode

Once again, Hasbro has done a bang-up job of translating personality of a character into the Legends size. And, quite impressively, they’ve scaled down the toy into a reasonable facsimile of the G1 version. Perhaps most impressively is that they’ve given Megatron his ubiquitous fusion cannon on his arm without the need for a scope.

Gun Mode

The gun is really close to being a Walter P-38, albeit a really small one. Unfortunately, toy safety laws mean that even a gun this small needs an orange tip on the barrel, something that early press-kit photos didn’t have.

The Good
It’s Megatron in gun form! That’s awesome! He’s not a tank, not a jet, not a blaster — he’s a gun. For the G1 fan in me, this is great, although I’m not opposed to other alt-modes for Megatron.

The Bad
While I understand the need for the orange tip, that doesn’t mean I have to necessarily like it. And maybe I was spoiled by Legends Starscream or Legends Optimus, but something about Megatron’s transformation underwhelmed me.  I can’t quite put my finger on it.  These aren’t really “bad” things, but the’re just middling things that make me like the toy less.

The Final Rewind
If you can find him (check closeout stores or Internet retailers), I’d say he’s worth getting, especially if you buy a set of Legends.  Would I overpay for him on eBay?  Not too much, although if you are someone who really hates that Megatron isn’t a gun anymore, then by all means, get him at a premium.
