“Sleigh Ride”
By Debbie Gibson
I admit it. I had a crush on Debbie Gibson growing up. Her “Electric Youth” album was a favorite of mine in high school. I still love “Lost in Your Eyes”. I outgrew the crush, but I still have a fondness for her 80’s songs.
This song appeared on one of the “A Very Special Christmas” albums. I think I happened to randomly hear this on the radio, and was able to figure out how to get it via Tower Records website. This was back in the late 90’s, so ordering online was very odd and not the normal day thing it is now.
I love this version of “Sleigh Ride” for the bridge. The verses and choruses are a peppy cut-time swing rhythm, but when we get to the bridge, we shift to a straight four-four beat. The accompaniment also simplifies with a nice bass line, and this gives it a feeling of slowing down even though the tempo hasn’t really changed.
I love the chording and bass line, I love this straight, square rhythm. It just feels like the 80’s music I loved. It being Debbie Gibson doesn’t hurt either.
It’s not a classic rendition of “Sleigh Ride” but it’s one of my favorites.
Tomorrow – the Christmas song I hate the most.
