Hasbro Transformers Q&A – August 2009

Hasbro has once again come through with answers to your questions! Read on for the info… and an apology….
With a bit of embarassment, ASM admits that its first question was a repeat of the question regarding the Fallen’s multiuniverse singularity categorization that TF Wiki sent in and got answered earlier in August. To be fair, when we sent these questions, we didn’t know that they had sent that question in. Hence, only two questions will be displayed for this month

  1. Does Hasbro create redecos before having a willing retailer to sell them, or do Target/Wal*Mart/etc. come to Hasbro and say “We want something for $20” and then Hasbro creates an exclusive? If both are valid methods, which is more prevalent?

The main line and exclusives line are created independtly from one another, as they both serve different needs, but are meant to exist under the same Transformers umbrella.

Needless to say, as with every product that we release, we strive to make the best product possible whether it be a mainline or an exclusive item.

  2. With the movie line, we’ve seen non-vehicle-mode Transformers such as Scalpel and Ejector. What are the team’s thoughts on designing toys like this? Is it a nice challenging break from vehicles, and do you think the potential is there to bring such ideas to non-Movie lines?
Working with Michael Bay and the studio has allowed us to think of Transformers in new ways and deliver new expressions of the characters.

We certainly do not feel as though we are ever inhibited from exploring other forms whenever we are designing our line at any point in time.
