More Music of Christmas – Day 7: Step Into Christmas

“Step Into Christmas”
By Elton John and Bernie Taupin

I don’t have too much to say about this song. On the face of it, it’s an oddity for holiday songs. It is definitely a product of its time, even though it was produced to mimic the Phil Spector “Wall of Sound” from a decade or more prior. It’s a mix of 1960’s and 1970’s sound, and it sounds very much of its era.

And the lyrics seem very much aware of what the song is — it’s not so much a song about Christmas as it’s a song about being a song for Christmas.

But yet, it works. It won’t be one of your favorites, but it won’t be one of your hated songs. Sometimes it’s okay for a song to just exist in a middle region. And that’s what this song does.

(And yes, I chose this song because it made a brief appearance in the 2019 “Gavin and Stacey” Christmas episode.)

Tomorrow – get the aftershave.
