Welcome to Monday Music Monstrosity, where each Monday I will talk about a holiday song I absolutely detest. I won’t link to it because it sucks so hard. I just want to share my pain because misery loves company.
Monday Music Monstrosity #2
“Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”
By John Lennon and Yoko Ono
I know, right? Hating a John Lennon song probably means I’m gonna burn in the Bad Place. One of the Beatles, one of the world’s greatest song writers — and I hate one of his songs?
But it’s true. I can’t stand this song. If it’s on the radio, I’ll immediately turn it off. It doesn’t provoke as large a visceral reaction as “The Christmas Shoes” but I just don’t like it.
It’s the kids singing at the end. Children’s choirs usually make me grit my teeth. Not always, mind, but most of the time. This song is no exception. The children singing the counter-melody “War is over” may be sweet and a wonderful idea to most, but not me. The worst is the repeated “Happy Christmas” at the end. It sounds robotic in the way it’s the same pattern and delivery over and over and over and make it stop.
So yeah. Heresy. Sacrilege. I hate a John Lennon song. I’m sure you’ll be bringing the torches and pitchforks soon.
Not the worst Christmas song, though….
Tomorrow — the only time Mixbaely BublĂ© appears in the list.
